Cabinets in process of installation:
Now that the clear-coat is dry, I can take some more pictures of the refinished floors upstairs. They came out beautifully. The only place where you can see any wear/damage is nail holes where we removed the bathroom wall. And it’s an old house, so I even like the look of that! Nothing an area rug can’t hide if necessary.
Refinished floors, bedroom and bath:
Also, all the cabinets were delivered yesterday. They’ll be set in place today.
The new, pre-finished, hardwood floors in the kitchen are gorgeous. The refinished fur floors upstairs are spectacular. It’s a whole new house.

Tomorrow, the upstairs floors will be refinished. When the contractor pulled up the cheap vinyl tile in the bathroom, they found pristine, never finished, fir wood floors. So, we decided to refinish the bedroom and hallways at the same time, leaving carpet only in the office and walk-in closet.
The previous owner had painted multiple times, letting things drip and splatter on the wood in the bedroom. We figured it was a good opportunity to do the same before they were refinished. The old bedroom color was an odd, ugly teal or aquamarine. We’ve now made it the same as the bathroom walls, Benjamin-Moore Saybrook Sage. I had to repair some drywall and box some unused electrical circuits as well, but the painting is all done.
Bedroom paint, before (top) and after (bottom):
We were away for the weekend (for the birth of our new granddaughter, Lydia Mae Hypes – woohoo!) When I returned, the drywall was complete and the walls were primed for painting. Dramatic changes!
Drywall and priming:
NASA has published before and after pictures of Friday’s storm damage in the mid-Atlantic. Using Photoshop, I created an image from the differences in the photos, focused on the Baltimore-DC metro areas. It provides interesting insight into the extent of the damage based on power outages.
Lights before storm, after storm, and the image difference:
We were one of very few houses that didn’t lose power during the storm. We’ve been a cooling and charging station for our neighbors, and we’re storing a lot of frozen meat for all of them. Power is starting to come back into the neighborhood, but it’s been slow.
Over the last few days, inspections were completed and insulation was installed. Drywall and other materials were delivered on Tuesday. Drywall crew starts today. Starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel!
Insulation and drywall:
Electrical and plumbing rough-in is complete, and the inspector is coming today. However, the nice surprise yesterday was that the contractors re-sided the back of the house (salvaging the pieces of old siding to fill in the sides where the new roof went in). It’s just vinyl, but it looks good! We’ll probably re-clad the whole house next year.
Matching the color of the old siding was not possible… because the previous owners had painted that awful blue over the blue-gray siding at some point. That’s why we decided to re-clad the back and salvage the painted stuff, so there’s no major mismatch on any side right now.
New siding on back of house:
So much more light, so many more views of the garden. And so much more ugly gray exterior paneling exposed!
